Davina Shindler: A teratogen is not itself a toxin, but rather a type of toxin. As you point out, teratogens cause birth defect by damaging and changing DNA. Dioxins and PCBs are the most common ones we hear about. Teratogens in the environment result in less-healthy populations, with many individuals having defects that prevent them from being able to survive (things like partially-formed legs, conjoined twins, etc).
