Cedric Grimstead: Keep in mind that dvd movies are either encoded by Dolby Digital or DTS. If you do not have a Dolby or DTS decoder in your computer then you are not going to get the 5.1 audio. Hope this will help you out.
Eva Lichlyter: - Hdmi cable is capable of up to 8 channels of audio=7.1 surround sound using either uncompressed stereo or lossy compression or loseless compression which is dts-hd-master-audio or dolby-true-hd.- A s/pdif optical cable or s/pdif coaxial is capable of up to 6 channels of audio=5.1 surround sound using either uncompressed stereo or the lossy compression which is dts or dolby digital surround sound formats.You need a decoder, in order the send a surround sound signal through the s/pdif cable.- You should download k-lite codec pack and use ffdshow video and audio decoder, go to output settings on ffdshow audio decoder and configure it accordingly and configure the mixer + resample format (if it's not at 48,000 hz at highest quality).! - I think vlc player has it's own audio decoder built in as well, I think you can use that instead too.
