Vegans: Am I a true vegan?

Hermina Ketring: First of all, and most importantly - all you can do is your best. You can not be 100% vegan - 100% avoiding everything thats involved animals in your life. As long as you're trying your best, you're doing well - you're doing a lot more than most people. It is however easily possible for humans to avoid eating and drinking animal products 100%, and you seem to have that sorted.* Your cats - It is possible to get vegan cat food, but, it is better for your cats if you carry on feeding them what they are used to, in my opinion - it is totally natural for them to eat mostly meat stuff, and they don't like the vegan stuff you've given them, so I wouldn't worry about that - you're doing whats best for them.* Boar brush - You can get non-animal brushes to groom your cats, so, when that brush wears out/ needs replacing, you may want to look into alternatives - this will be easy to change.* Hair dye/ nails - I would ask the people who do your hair and nails what pr! oducts they use, and whether they have other options for you, if it turns out they're not vegan. If you research beforehand, you will be able to tell them the products that ARE vegan - unless they're vegan themself, they probably won't have given it much thought. They may be able to accomodate you - they want your custom and your money, so its possible. Its always worth asking. Its up to you whether this bothers you or not - I think the fact you've mentioned it shows it does a bit.* Its very unlikely that the soap is vegan in ingredients and not tested on animals. For me, I personally wouldn't have taken it home as I always have vegan hand soap at home, so I wouldn't need it - I'm happier knowing what I'm using is vegan. I use other soap when I'm out and about that isn't vegan, as its not practical to take a soap dispenser everywhere, but at home I only use vegan....Show more

Mauro Cowee: Being vegan is about doing your best to reduce animal use. No one expects you to! be perfect from day 1. No one is going to judge you If you ca! n't get your cats to go vegan (VegeCat, for all the nay-sayers, is a vegan brand of cat food that has been found to be healthier than commercial cat foods for most cats) Well, no reasonable people will judge you. TBH, I have seen some ridiculously judgmental people out there, but just ignore them. Just keep up the good work, Keep striving to be better, don't sweat the small stuff. etc etc etc...Show more

Marita Stadick: Your cat is a carnivore and should be fed meat regardless of your diet. In regards to the rest of the list, it sounds as though you are vegan in diet and nearly there in lifestyle. There are vegan hair dyes and nail polishes tho.... if you choose to search them out.

Sheree Hipwell: sweet heart from the sounds of it u are quite a animal lover. A vegan is a person who doesnt consume animal products, such as milk, eggs, meat, etc. But from the sounds of it im sure u are a vegan

Alecia Kaehler: NO! If you so much as touch any object that has an! ything to do an animal, you are not a TRUE vegan! You need to train your cats to only eat vegan cat food. Don't worry that nature has designed everything about their body to eat meat. This isn't the olden days! If you're so uptight about animal products, your cats must be too. You're only allowed to dye your hair with henna, and you're only allowed to use Dr. Bronner's soap for everything....Show more

Eulah Hugill: Good for you on your cat's diet!!! I also feed my kitty a species-appropriate, all raw diet. A cat is an obligate carnivore. Fact. To deny an animal it's natural food is evil and sickening, and UN-vegan as hell!I mean, if a vegan cannot stomach to feed their cat correctly, they should give the cat away. After all, a pet is a slave to our whims anyhow. (Not that it keeps me from slobbering over mine)On the brush-- well, it is the brush for your cat, not you, right? Then it's fine. If it was yours, it would NOT be vegan in any way.On the hair and nail ! products. Oh, boy. Animals usually fit somehow into all chemical produ! cts. But here is where you need to do your own research. I think the hair and nail pros will not mind if you bring in your own materials, but ask in advance. Most soaps from hotels are simple detergents. Just keep it for emergencies and buy your own vegetable oil soap. In my opinion, you are a vegan....Show more

Jestine Osumi: That doesn't necessarily mean you aren't vegan? Vegan means you don'te eat meat fish dairy or egg. Not that you don't use it in products. That's your personal choice of lifestyle. f you choose to use consumer products animal product free, against animal cruilty, etc look for those labels. i know a mineral cosmetic brand that has that. called emani minerals. I believe birts bees is natural and against such too, check it out . Go to holistic grocery stores like whole foods and look at their hair dyes(made from plants and hemp), soaps, toiletry products there....Show more

Rebeca Mckin: TO be vegan is to not exploit animals as far as you po! ssibly can. As coined by Donald Watson , the founder of the VEgan society. Neither he, nor anyone in the initial stages, EVER said, you cannot do anything at all in life, because somewhere down the production line of this chair/piece of paper/pencil/lightbulb, will be a poor suffering animal. Yes, he started the VS in simpler times, but his primary thought was that we use animals for everything and we don't need to. SO stop using them. If you know a chair is leather, do not use it. If you're innocently using a pencil which has had squid ink poured into its lead, then once you know about it, avoid using it, and carry your own pencil. Things are ow more complex, and have risen above DOnald Watson's simpler life , but you can still be responsible for what you use and don't use. As far as you possible can. Ie, don't buy products which test on animals, use baking soda instead. Don't use leather of course- use cotton instead. And so on. If, in each action you consciously make a c! hoice to inform yourself and not support animal slavery, they yes you c! an be vegan. Of course you can. Smartazses like to complain nobody can be vegan if they so much as breath inwards. These people are wheat you'd call anal. GLue, toothpaste, soap, ink, common items like that are easy to spot and easy to keep away from. So use your sense and cleverness- use flour and water for glue, or whatever. It's easy and cheaper(!) to use non animal stuff anyway. The thing is, glue and ink are in so many things- binding books together. They weren't used as much in Donald Watsons' day. I think the aim of begin vegan is a much greater challenge nowadays. Maybe he started what each person who actually cares for animals should now take on themselves. Make it a point in your own life to NOT use books bound with animal glue etc. One action makes a difference if you turn it into a routine and ritual....Show more

Giovanna Sherlin: When it comes to pets, you have to do what is best for them. Otherwise it's animal cruelty, which is very un-vegan. Feeding y! our cats meat products is great, but I personally would donate the brush to an animal shelter and buy a new one. You could always ask the person doing your hair and nails to read the ingredients on the products. Odds are they're not vegan, but you may be able to bring in vegan alternatives and still get your hair and nails professionally done. I've also heard that Aveda salons use only vegan products. I honestly wouldn't trust soap from a hotel even if I wasn't vegan. Hotel rooms are nasty places. But odds are it's made with animal glycerin and isn't vegan. There are about a million and a half brands of vegan soap out there; you just need to run a quick Google search to find them. If you need something really, really inexpensive, baking soda can replace just about any personal care item....Show more
